Presenters - Biographical details


Hamed El-Kady serves as Expert in the International Investment Agreements Section of UNCTAD's Division on Investment, Technology and Enterprise Development.

He holds a Master's degree in International Relations from the European Campus of Saint Louise Webster University in Geneva. During his studies he focused on current developments in the international economic order and the multilateral trading system.

In 2003 he joined UNCTAD where he monitors and analyzes new developments in international trade and investment rule-making. He has published various articles on Arab economic integration and on investment agreements and their development implications.

 


Joachim Karl, of German nationality, is a Legal Affairs Officer in the Division on Investment, Technology and Enterprise Development of UNCTAD.

Before joining the UN in November 2005, he worked for seven years on international investment matters at the OECD and the Energy Charter Secretariat in Brussels.

He started his professional career in the German Ministry of Economics, where he dealt with European Law issues and the negotiation of international investment agreements.

His education includes a PhD in international law from the University of Konstanz in Germany, and a Master of Public Administration degree from Harvard's J.F.Kennedy School of Government.

He has written numerous articles on European law and international investment issues, and was a lecturer at the German Federal Academy of Public Administration.
